URGENT: Hurricane Michael Phone Zap

Hurricane Michael, now a Category 4, is slated to be the worst hurricane to hit Florida in over 100 years and the the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) refuses to evacuate 15 state prisons in mandatory evacuation zones.

We need your help putting pressure on each state to ensure the horrors that happened at FCI Beaumont during Hurricane Harvey don’t happen again. This tactic proved effective just last month when North Carolina and Virginia evacuated prisons ahead of Hurricane Florence!

Demands-

  1. Immediate evacuation of all prisoners from every State Prison in the Mandatory Evacuation zone.
  2. Stockpiling of Water and Food at every facility that may be impacted by power outages.

Numbers to Call-

Governor Rick Scott

Phone- (850) 488-7146

FDC Region 1 Director Angela Gordon (angela.gordon@fdc.myflorida.com)

Phone – (850) 627-5511

FDC Region 2 Director Eric V. Hummel (erich.hummel@fdc.myflorida.com)

Phone – (386) 496-6000

Federal Bureau of Prisons

Southeastern Regional Office- (678) 686-1200

No word on: FCI Marianna, FPC Pensacola, FCI Tallahassee

When you get a response use #EvacuateFLPrisoners and tweet @FightToxicPrisons & @iwoc_gnv! Numbers aren’t working? Tweet us with number updates too!

If you can, record the phone call and email it to us. If it turns out they’re lying, we’ll have voice-recorded evidence. (Email FightToxicPrisons@gmail.com)

Also, we don’t trust ANY Department of Corrections. Per Jailhouse Lawyers Speak’s advice, “If you know any prisoners in this storm path, it’s important to tell them to fill up any containers or bags with water NOW!! Prisons are notorious for not giving adequate drinking water to prisoners if any at all after the water is contaminated.”

  1. Talked to an officer at Wakulla CI and she stated “most” of the phones are still on for the inmates to use. Said that Panama city was the one’s really hit and that it is about an hour away from there. They boarded up the windows, have food and water and that it pretty much feels like a tropical storm with winds and rain.

  3. Hi I have a family member that is in the Gulf of Florida prison that contacted us earlier today letting us know that it was bad there that the roof about came off and that they’re trapped inside, I’m wondering if you may know how I can get some more information because no one is able to help me. I called several numbers busy tone, no answer, answering machine, one person did answer she told me the same thing about 4 times over and over that they’re just watching the storm and waiting for them to contact them pretty much is what she said. I asked her where can I go to online or who may I contact for more information who was above her or who can help me out with more details info and what is going to happen to our loved ones, and she said it’s up to me to decide where I go on the internet and get my updates. Please please if you can help me that would be so grateful.

  4. Gulf CI had some roof dange while inmates were still there. They had also lost power and no talk of evacuating them. They were told they would leave phones on so they can communicate but since 3pm no word or updates. Their main number sounds disconnected since early afternoon. Hoping everyone is ok.
